Digital SAT Tips: Strategies for the New Format

ScoreSmarter EditorialDecember 26, 2025Updated February 21, 2026

The digital SAT is a different test than the paper version. Here are specific strategies for the adaptive format, built-in tools, and time management.

Digital SAT Tips and Strategies: Maximize Your Score

The Digital SAT is a fundamentally different test from the old paper SAT. These strategies are specifically designed for the adaptive, digital format that launched in 2024.

Understanding the Adaptive Format

The Digital SAT uses section-level adaptive testing:

ModuleHow It Works
Reading & Writing Module 1Medium difficulty, establishes your baseline
Reading & Writing Module 2Difficulty adjusts based on Module 1 performance
Math Module 1Medium difficulty, establishes your baseline
Math Module 2Difficulty adjusts based on Module 1 performance

Key insight: Performing well on Module 1 is critical. It determines whether you get the harder Module 2 (which has a higher scoring ceiling) or the easier Module 2 (which caps your maximum score lower).

Reading & Writing Strategies

Short Passage Approach

Unlike the old SAT with long passages, the Digital SAT uses short passages (1-2 paragraphs) with one question each. This changes your strategy:

Old SAT StrategyDigital SAT Strategy
Read the full passage firstRead the passage carefully (it is short)
Refer back to passage for evidenceAnswer directly from what you just read
Time management across passage setsTime management across individual questions
Skip hard passages, return laterFlag and skip hard questions, return later

Grammar and Rhetoric Tips

Question TypeStrategy
Standard English ConventionsKnow the grammar rules cold (subject-verb agreement, punctuation, modifiers)
Craft and StructureFocus on word choice in context and text structure
Information and IdeasRead carefully for main idea and supporting evidence
Expression of IdeasChoose the answer that best achieves the stated goal

Time Management for R&W

  • Module 1: 32 minutes for 27 questions (~71 seconds per question)
  • Module 2: 32 minutes for 27 questions (~71 seconds per question)
  • Strategy: Spend no more than 90 seconds on any question. Flag it and move on.

Math Strategies

Calculator for Everything

The Digital SAT allows calculator use on all math questions. The built-in Desmos graphing calculator is powerful:

Desmos FeatureWhen to Use It
Graphing equationsSystems of equations, quadratic problems
Table featureFinding patterns, testing values
RegressionData analysis questions
SliderExploring parameter changes

Pro tip: Practice with Desmos before test day. Knowing how to use it efficiently can save significant time on complex problems.

Math Content Focus

TopicWeightPriority
Algebra~35%High (linear equations, systems, functions)
Advanced Math~35%High (quadratics, polynomials, exponentials)
Problem Solving & Data~15%Medium (ratios, percentages, statistics)
Geometry & Trigonometry~15%Medium (area, volume, right triangles, trig)

Time Management for Math

  • Module 1: 35 minutes for 22 questions (~95 seconds per question)
  • Module 2: 35 minutes for 22 questions (~95 seconds per question)
  • Strategy: Do easy questions first (under 60 seconds), then medium, then hard. Flag and return to anything taking over 2 minutes.

Digital-Specific Strategies

Using the Annotation Tool

The Digital SAT lets you highlight and annotate text. Use this to:

  • Highlight key phrases in reading passages
  • Mark transition words that signal argument structure
  • Underline the specific claim being tested

Using the Flag Feature

Flag questions you are unsure about and return to them after completing easier questions. This is more efficient than spending 3 minutes on a hard question while easy points wait.

Managing Screen Fatigue

Reading on a screen for 2+ hours can cause fatigue:

  • Take the optional 10-minute break between R&W and Math
  • Adjust screen brightness if allowed
  • Practice taking full-length tests on a computer before test day

FAQ

Q: Is the Digital SAT easier than the old paper SAT? A: The Digital SAT is shorter and uses shorter passages, which many students find less fatiguing. However, the adaptive format means strong students face harder questions. Overall difficulty is comparable, but the experience feels different.

Q: Should I bring my own calculator? A: You can bring an approved calculator, but the built-in Desmos graphing calculator is available on every math question. Many students find Desmos more powerful than their handheld calculator. Practice with both before test day.

Q: How important is Module 1 performance? A: Very important. Strong Module 1 performance unlocks the harder Module 2, which has a higher scoring ceiling. Focus on accuracy in Module 1, even if it means working slightly slower.

Q: Can I go back to previous questions? A: Yes, within each module. You cannot go back to a previous module once you have moved on. Use the flag feature to mark questions for review within each module.
